da Vinci ® Gynecology Procedures

The longstanding approach to many gynecology procedures has been traditional open gynecological surgery, which uses a large incision to access the uterus and surrounding anatomy. But open surgery can include trauma, significant pain, lengthy recovery and threatening surrounding organs and nerves.

Fortunately, less invasive options are available. Some gynecologic procedures enable surgeons to access the target anatomy using a vaginal approach, which may not require an external incision. But for complex hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures, robotic assisted surgery with the innovative da Vinci® Surgical System may be the most effective and least invasive treatment option.

The da Vinci System is a state-of-the-art surgical platform with 3D high-definition vision and miniaturized wristed surgical instruments designed to help doctors take surgery beyond the limits of the human hand. By helping doctors to overcome the challenges of traditional open and laparoscopic surgery, da Vinci is changing the experience of surgery for women around the world. da Vinci offers women having surgery at miVIP facilities many potential benefits over traditional surgery, including:

  • Less pain
  • Fewer complications
  • Less blood loss
  • No hospitalization required
  • Low risk of wound infection
  • Quicker recovery and return to normal activities

da Vinci Gynecology Procedures

  • da Vinci Hysterectomy: removal of the uterus, the second most common surgical procedure for women in the United States.
  • da Vinci Myomectomy: removal of myomas, benign (non-cancerous) tumors that develop in the uterus.
  • da Vinci Endometriosis Resection: removal of uterine lining that has grown in other pelvic organs, a condition known as endometriosis.

Conditions

A wide variety of conditions may affect a woman’s reproductive system and indicate surgical treatment. These conditions include:

  • Cervical Cancer: mutation in the cellular lining of the cervix, resulting in a cancerous growth.
  • Uterine Cancer: the most common malignancy of the female genital tract and the fourth most common cancer in women.
  • Uterine Bleeding: excessive or prolonged menstrual bleeding often due to a uterine growth or hormone imbalance.
  • Pelvic Prolapse: movement of the uterus out of its normal position when pelvic muscles and connective tissues weaken.
  • Myomas: benign tumors growing on the wall of the uterus, often called “fibroid tumors.”
  • Endometriosis/Adenomyosis: growth of tissue that usually lines the uterus in areas outside of the uterus, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes and other parts in the pelvic cavity.
