Foot & Ankle Surgery at Our Los Angeles Center

Foot & Ankle Specialty

The foot and ankle specialty is a podiatry division that focuses on treating the complex conditions that can arise from a foot and ankle injury or chronic condition. When non-surgical methods such as bracing and anti-inflammatory medications no longer prove effective, surgery may be considered to correct foot and ankle deformities.

Foot and ankle surgeries encompass a variety of medical conditions. These include:

  • Ankle fractures
  • Achilles tendonitis, where the Achilles tendon on the back of your heel becomes inflamed and stiff
  • Diabetic foot complications, which can result in loss of nerve sensation in the foot
  • Foot and ankle arthritis
  • Foot fractures
  • Foot sprains
  • Peroneal tendinopathy, or inflammation of the peroneal tendons that run over the outer portion of the ankle
  • Stress fractures
  • Toe fractures
  • Turf toe, a common injury to athletes such as football and soccer players that sprains the toe and causes chronic pain

Am I a Candidate for Foot & Ankle Surgery?

Examples of symptoms that may warrant a foot and ankle surgical consultation include:

  • Chronic foot and ankle pain
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Loss of mobility
  • Tightness or stiffness in the foot and ankle
  • Tingling or numbness in the toes

If you experience these or other symptoms related to your foot and/or ankle, your miVIP surgeon can evaluate your condition and recommend surgical procedures as appropriate.

Procedures Offered

miVIP Surgery Centers offer a number of minimally invasive surgical procedures used to treat foot and ankle-related conditions. Examples include:

Ankle Fusion: Ankle fusion is a surgical procedure that can correct a misalignment of your ankles due to previous injury or osteoarthritis that can affect your joint shape. If you have a history of infection in the ankle area or dead bone tissue, the ankle fusion procedure also may help patients return to physical activity. This procedure type is typically recommended for those younger than age 30. Ankle fusion surgery can be performed laparoscopically in some instances.

Debridement: A surgical method used to relieve osteoarthritis by removing damaged or diseased cartilage and bone around the ankle. The result is greater mobility and less pain from bone overgrowth.

Fracture Reduction: If you have experienced a foot and ankle injury due to trauma, a surgeon can correct and realign the foot and ankle by cutting through the skin to access the damaged bones. Screws and plates may be applied to the area to allow the bones to heal and set correctly.

Minimizing Complications

While complications and risks are associated with any surgical procedure, miVIP Surgery Centers surgeons work to minimize these risks as much as possible. In many instances, foot and ankle surgeries can be performed using minimally invasive procedures that involve making smaller incisions to access the delicate bones of your foot and ankle. Always evaluate potential risks and complications with your surgeon, including:

  • Complications from anesthesia, such as tingling and numbness
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Nerve damage
  • Post-operative pain

Once you have evaluated the risks and rewards, foot and ankle surgery at miVIP Surgery Centers can help get you back to a pain-free and mobile life.
