Frequently Asked Questions

What is miVIP Surgery?

miVIP Surgery is an acronym used by our Surgery Centers for minimally invasive Very Important Patient Surgery. To ensure safety, all patients are carefully and thoroughly cleared medically for outpatient surgery. Minimally invasive surgery is usually performed through small incisions (operating ports) rather than large incisions. In most cases this approach leads to shorter recovery times, fewer complications, no hospitalization and less trauma.

Does traditional laparoscopic surgery have limitations?

Although laparoscopic surgery is widely used in hospitals today, laparoscopic techniques are limited in their use. Traditional laparoscopic technology has limited capability, mostly due to the standard video and rigid instruments surgeons must use to operate through small incisions. Surgeons lack the required visualization via the laparoscopic instruments and video monitor to perform complex surgeries, such as nerve-sparing prostatectomy.

What benefits does da Vinci Surgery at miVIP Surgery Centers offer compared to traditional methods?

Our expert surgeons using the da Vinci  Surgical System have greater precision, range of motion, dexterity, visualization and access. Patients who undergo surgery using the da Vinci system compared to traditional surgery are usually not hospitalized and face less pain, risk of infection, blood loss, and scarring, as well as a faster recovery time.

Has the FDA approved the da Vinci Surgical System?

The da Vinci Surgical System is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a broad range of procedures, including those offered at miVIP Surgery Centers.

Is da Vinci Surgery covered by insurance?

Most PPO insurances define da Vinci Surgery as robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery and do cover it. If you call 888-996-4847, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, we will be happy to determine whether your insurance will cover your procedure at one of our miVIP Surgery Centers.

What procedures are the da Vinci Surgical System use for, and what procedures might it be used for in the future?

The da Vinci System is a robotic surgical platform that can aid in the performance of a broad range of complex procedures through incisions that are only 1 or 2 centimeters long. The system has been used to perform tens of thousands of procedures worldwide in the areas of general, urologic, gynecologic and thoracoscopic surgery.
