da Vinci ® Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery at Our Los Angeles Center

Sleeve gastrectomy can prove to be a life-saving approach to weight loss. This surgical approach involves removing a portion of your stomach and creating a significantly smaller one that is roughly the size of a banana. Because your stomach is smaller, you cannot eat as much food at one time and you feel fuller while eating less.

While most gastric sleeve surgery procedures are performed using a minimally invasive approach, miVIP Los Angeles Surgery Centers takes this process one step smaller thanks to the use of the innovative da Vinci® Surgical System.

While many people call da Vinci procedures “robotic surgery,” this is not exactly true. Instead, the da Vinci system acts as an extension of one of a surgeon’s greatest assets: his hands.

Take the da Vinci sleeve gastrectomy procedure step-by-step: You will begin by being placed under general anesthesia, which puts you in a deep sleep. You will not feel pain during the da Vinci gastric sleeve operation because you will be asleep for the entire procedure. Your surgeon will then make a few small incisions in your abdomen, depending upon the best individual approach for your body. Because the da Vinci offers a surgeon greater movement capabilities than using his hands, the incisions typically are smaller than traditional minimally invasive surgery.

One aspect of da Vinci sleeve gastrectomy surgery is the three-dimensional camera inserted into your abdomen. This allows your surgeon a full view into your body. Using controls, your surgeon will direct the da Vinci’s “arms” to move inside your body, removing an estimated 80 to 85 percent of your stomach. Staples will be applied to hold the newly formed stomach in place and allow for healing. Your surgeon also will use da Vinci to create a new connection between your stomach and bowel, which can be sewn more precisely using the da Vinci system.

Who Is A Candidate for da Vinci Sleeve Gastrectomy?

From gastric bypass to gastric banding to sleeve gastrectomy, there are a number of approaches to weight loss surgery. Candidates for sleeve gastrectomy are typically those who tend to be on the very high end of the body mass index spectrum and for whom gastric banding or bypass may be too dangerous or ineffective in treating obesity.
