About Your Surgery

Preparing for surgery

In the weeks leading up to your surgery, staying healthy mentally and physically is extremely important. 

  • Write down any questions and bring them with you to your pre-operative appointment.
  • Recruit a friend or family member to drive you to and from the surgery center on the day of your surgery.
  • Purchase any recovery supplies you will need. 
  • Stop smoking at least a month before surgery.
  • Follow your surgeon's instructions for medication.
  • Fill any post-operative prescriptions.
  • Refrain from any alcohol use at least 48 hours before surgery.
  • Inform your surgeon if you become sick.
  • Pack your bag the night before.

Surgery Day

  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing.
  • Bring a container for your glasses or contacts.
  • Take off all jewelry.
  • Bring your insurance card, driver's license and medical power of attorney documents if you have them.
  • Bring all educational material given to you during your pre-operative appointments.
  • Review the surgery and timeline with your driver.
  • Arrive early to your appointment to reduce stress.

After surgery

If you have chest pain, shortness of breath or excessive abdominal pain, call 911 immediately.

  • Follow the discharge instructions given to you by the surgeon and medical staff.
  • Do not lift heavy objects.
  • Slowly return to normal activities.
  • Follow any diet guidelines given to you .
  • Call miVIP for any non-emergency questions.
